SEOs Are More Worried About AI This Year — Here’s What’s Really Going On

If you work in SEO, you’ve probably felt it. That low-level anxiety that the ground is shifting under your feet. Turns out, you’re not imagining it — and you’re definitely not alone.

A new survey from SEOjobs.com asked 279 SEO and search professionals how they’re feeling about AI. The results are… not exactly comforting, but they are revealing. Nearly 44% said they’re more worried about AI than they were a year ago .

But here’s the thing: the fear isn’t really about robots taking jobs. It’s about something more subtle — and honestly, more stressful.

The Numbers That Matter
Let’s get the stats out of the way first. Of the 279 people surveyed:

43.7% are more concerned about AI than they were 12 months ago

33% are very or extremely concerned that AI could hurt their job or income within two years

Only 15.4% said they weren’t concerned at all

Those numbers tell a story. But the real story is in what specifically scares people.

The Fear Isn’t Losing Your Job. It’s Losing Your Team.
When asked what worries them most, “role elimination” didn’t even make the top three. Here’s what did:

Smaller teams — 45.5% picked this

Keeping up with AI — 44.8%

Tougher competition — 44.1%

Skills losing value — 33.3%

Lower pay or rates — 30.1%

Role eliminated — 24.4%

See the pattern? The anxiety isn’t “I’ll be fired tomorrow.” It’s “I’ll be asked to do the same job with fewer people, faster tools, and way more pressure.”

One in-house SEO with 11–15 years of experience put it bluntly in the survey: “Selling my role’s value to higher ups if they think SEO is going away.”

That’s the vibe. It’s not panic. It’s exhaustion mixed with uncertainty.

Who’s Feeling It Most?
Not everyone is equally stressed. The survey breaks it down:

By employment status:

Job seekers are the most worried — 61.1% are very or extremely concerned. Makes sense. If you’re looking for work, a shrinking industry is terrifying.

In-house SEOs are the most likely to fear losing their specific role (32%).

Agency folks worry more about smaller teams (51%) and disappearing entry-level jobs.

Business owners are mostly stressed about keeping up with AI (70%).

By experience:

People with 6–10 years in the field are the most concerned overall (42% very/extremely).

Those with 16+ years are most worried about keeping up with AI.

The 11–15 year group? They’re watching their skills lose value in real time.

By country:

Germany: 71.4% highly concerned

UK: 44.7%

US: 27.9%

Americans are comparatively chill. Make of that what you will.

The Real Takeaway
This survey is a snapshot of an industry in transition. The fear is real, but it’s not irrational. SEO is changing. The tools are different. The competition is fiercer. Teams are leaner.

But here’s what the data doesn’t say: it doesn’t say SEO is dying. It says SEO professionals are being asked to adapt faster than ever, often without enough support, while proving their value to people who might not fully understand what they do.

If you’re feeling that anxiety, you’re in the majority. The survey doesn’t offer a cure, but it does offer something almost as useful: proof that you’re not imagining the pressure.

The job isn’t going away. It’s just getting harder. And apparently, we’re all in that together.
